Forensic psychology deals with the human mind and behavior within the context of criminal justice in a legal system. It encompasses a wide spectrum of tasks. The scope of forensic psychology has far-reaching implications as it deals with life and death situations.
Among a variety of responsibilities, the forensic psychologist might testify in court with regards to a suspected criminal’s state of mind. Their opinion on the suspect’s ability to stand trial, the suspect’s understanding of the charges laid against them, and the possible causes that motivated them to commit the crime are some of the important factors that are taken into consideration. The forensic psychologist’s input on these matters can strongly influence the outcome of the case. Their role therefore plays a very important part in legal proceedings.
The forensic psychologist has to examine the suspect from the perspective of a crime investigator. They need to determine the certainty and the accuracy of the suspect’s account. They also have to evaluate their mental condition and interpret their testimony in light of their present mental health. This would help the legal system to determine the extent of the role, the suspect played in committing the crime.
Sometimes, they may also work with victims to determine the veracity of events or facts. For instance, the psychologist might work with children in the case of suspected abuse. They would have to prepare the child to provide legal testimony. Their own input about their study on the child’s emotional impact due to the crime would play a major role in establishing facts.
These experts are also required quite often to assess the risk of releasing an offender back into the community. They would thoroughly study the offender and assess whether it is safe to place them back in mainstream society.
They would be consulted for developing rehabilitation and treatment programs for alcohol and drug addicts. They may also play an important role in implementing or reviewing existing programs.
They are sometimes called upon to provide solutions in a prison environment where the impact of bullying among prisoners might have to be curtailed through an effective anger management program.
A forensic psychologist would also train and mentor trainees and assistants, design training programs, work with crime victims, conduct research, provide organizational consultancy and be involved in a host of other activities.
The role of a forensic psychologist is therefore a multi-faceted one. People with a passion for psychology as well as criminology would be the best candidates for the job.
